YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

The Peoples Heartland Foundation is a 501c3 charity operating and managing the Home on the Range Site as a sub-foundation. Those family members or their heirs who were former beneficiaries of the Ellen Rust Trust will continue to serve in an advisory capacity to the Peoples Foundation.

Donations to date have provided for restoration of the Cabin, Cabin furnishings, nature walk foot bridges, and a commemorative flagpole. These projects are possible only by the donations of individuals, companies and other charities. Funds have also been raised to pay for two Kansas Department of Transportation signs naming the 16 mile stretch of highway where the Home on the Range Cabin is located as “The Home on the Range Highway”.

Additional funds were raised to support a historical documentary titled “Home on the Range” by Lone Chimney Films. This award-winning film tells the story of the proof of authorship and authenticity of one of the world’s most famous and beloved songs. The movie traces the origin of the song to Dr. Brewster Higley and to Smith County, KS.

Flooding of West Beaver Creek at the Cabin site in 2015-16 indicated the need for a professional site plan before proceeding with future improvements. The comprehensive plan has been completed and includes proposed locations for new permanent structures, erosion control, seeding of native grass, planting of pollinator plots and Wild Milkweed plots (Monarch butterflies habitat), tribute to the Pawnee nation, bird watching locations and many paths suitable for riding, hiking and biking.
